 IKI, PLN create synergy with idle assets


    State-owned shipyard PT IKI expects that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with state electricity firm PT PLN on the use of IKI’s under-utilized assets will help the shipyard’s revitalization efforts. “The synergy will allow IKI to utilize its idle assets. However, we have yet to assess the value of the asset utilization as it is still only an MoU,” IKI president director F. Harry Sampurno told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

    IKI has the capacity to build new ships of up to 100 meters in length and 10,000 DWT and has repair and maintenance facilities. “In the past we have manufactured patrol boats but for the time being we will focus on vessels for commercial purposes as well as for ministries,” Harry said over the phone. “Currently we are still repairing our graving dock before we can resume production activities.”

    The government is conducting a series of efforts to revitalize under-performing state-owned enterprises (SOE) such as by creating holding companies for SOEs with similar businesses and creating synergy between various SOEs. The MoU was signed by Harry and PLN director for eastern Indonesia operations Bambang Dwiyanto on Tuesday at PLN headquarters in Jakarta, PLN spokesman Bambang Dwiyanto said in a press statement.

    He said that the MoU was aimed as synergy to support the development of electricity infrastructure in eastern Indonesia. Bambang added that IKI’s assets to be used by PLN include generators and cold storage previously used in Minajaya fishing vessel projects as well as IKI’s production facilities such as mobile cranes, excavators and docking space.

    PLN will also provide consultancy and guidance to reduce electricity usage at IKI’s shipyard as well as access to IKI’s land. “The cooperation is a synergy between state-owned enterprises where PLN will utilize IKI’s idle plant and facilities for PLN’s units in eastern Indonesia,” Bambang said in the statement.
